RT9 is a generic VT9 type fridge thermostat for cycle defrost refrigeration. It suits 2 door cycle defrost fridge freezers as well as all fridge units with no freezer compartment. The cut-out adjusts from -26°C at the coldest setting to -11°C at the warmest, and the cut-in is fixed at +3.5°C. As a universal part, compare your old thermostat's type and settings with these before ordering.
How a cycle defrost thermostat keeps the fridge frost free
In a cycle defrost fridge, the thermostat's sensing tube is clamped to the fridge evaporator plate. The thermostat switches the compressor off once the plate reaches the cut-out temperature set on the knob, then waits until the plate has warmed to +3.5°C before switching back on. Because that cut-in sits above freezing, frost on the plate melts and drains away on every off cycle. When the thermostat fails, the fridge may run non-stop and freeze food, refuse to start at all, or build up thick ice on the plate because it never warms enough to defrost.

Fitting a universal fridge thermostat
Switch the fridge off at the power point and pull the plug before removing the thermostat cover. Note where the old sensing tube is clamped and how the wires connect, and take photos. Compare the capillary length, mounting and terminals with the new thermostat. Clamp the tube to the same spot on the evaporator plate without sharp bends and reconnect the wiring. If you aren't comfortable with mains wiring, have a qualified refrigeration technician fit it.
