It holds the halogen globe and its connections so the cooking area stays well lit. Because it sits right above the cooktop, it takes a lot of heat, steam and grease. Over the years the lamp holder can go brittle, the contacts corrode and the fitting works loose in its cut-out. If a new globe does not fix a dead light, the light flickers, or one light works and the other does not, the fitting is a likely suspect.
