Halogen light flickering or dead even with a new globe?

Halogen globes run hot, and that heat is hard on the lamp holder. Over time the body can crack, the contacts lose their spring and the wire terminals discolour or burn. The usual signs are a light that flickers, works only when the globe is wiggled, blows globes more often than it should or stays off even with a new globe fitted. Scorch marks around the socket are a clear sign it needs replacing. A worn holder also makes poor contact, which creates more heat and speeds up the damage.

Fitting the halogen lamp holder

This part connects to the rangehood's mains wiring, so have a licensed electrician fit it. Isolate power at the switchboard or wall first. Photograph the wiring before disconnecting the old holder, and check the leads for heat damage, as brittle insulation should be dealt with at the same time. Once the new holder is secure, fit a globe of no more than 100W and test.
