The aluminium filter catches airborne grease so it doesn't coat the fan, motor and ducting. After years of washing, filters bend out of shape, the mesh layers separate and the frame clips stop holding. A damaged filter lets grease straight through, so the hood gets noisier, pulls less air and leaves a sticky film inside. A filter that no longer sits flat also lets air bypass it altogether. Changing the filter

Switch the hood off and let the cooktop cool. Release the old filter by its catch, keeping a hand underneath so it doesn't drop onto the hotplates. Check the new filter faces the same way, hook in the back edge and push the front up until the catch locks. Clean the filters regularly in warm soapy water to keep the hood working well.
