Fridge freezer icing up? Check the defrost thermostat
Frost free fridges melt the ice off the evaporator at regular intervals. A timer or control board switches on a defrost heater, and the defrost termination thermostat on the coil switches that heater off once the coil has warmed enough. If the thermostat fails open, the heater never comes on and ice builds up until airflow stops, leaving the freezer cold but the fresh food section warm. If it sticks closed, the heater can run longer than it should. A thick sheet of ice on the back panel of the freezer is the classic sign. These thermostats are normally closed when cold, so a continuity test on a frozen coil is a useful check.

Fitting a clip-on defrost thermostat
Switch the fridge off at the wall and unplug it. Remove the freezer back panel and let any ice melt naturally rather than chipping at the coil. Photograph the wiring, disconnect the old thermostat, and join the new one with proper moisture proof connectors. Clip it tightly to the same tube so it reads the coil temperature accurately.
