The selector switch sits behind the function knob and routes power to the right combination of elements, fan and light for each setting, such as bake, fan forced or grill. Inside are contacts that wear, burn or stick over time, especially when heavy element loads pass through them. Faults show up as a setting that does nothing, the wrong element heating, the light or fan not running in some positions, a knob that turns loosely without clicking, or a burning smell from behind the control panel.

Wiring the selector switch
Isolate the oven at the switchboard before removing the control panel. Most wall ovens and upright cookers are hard-wired, so have a licensed electrician do the job. Photograph and label every wire on the old switch before removing anything, as a wrong connection can power the wrong element. Transfer the wires one at a time, refit the knob and test each function.
