Product details
M823-14 is a generic dual simmerstat, the temperature control switch behind a cooktop knob that regulates how much power reaches the hotplate. A dual unit is the type normally used with dual zone elements, where turning the knob further brings in the outer ring as well as the inner one. It's an aftermarket switch, so compare the shaft, terminal layout and mounting with your old simmerstat before ordering.
Cooktop hotplate stuck on high or not heating
A simmerstat, also called an energy regulator, doesn't measure temperature directly. It switches the element on and off in cycles, and the knob setting changes how long the on periods last. When the contacts weld together, the hotplate runs flat out no matter where the knob is set. When they burn out, the hotplate won't heat at all or only works on certain settings. On a dual unit, the outer ring may stop coming on while the centre still heats. Burnt terminals, a cracked body or a shaft that turns without clicking are other signs.

Replacing a cooktop simmerstat
Most electric cooktops are hard wired, so isolate the circuit at the switchboard and confirm it's dead before you start. Photograph the old simmerstat's terminal numbers and wire colours, then move each wire across one at a time to the matching terminal on the new one. Check the shaft length and flat suit your knob. Australian rules require a licensed electrician for this work.
Questions about this part
Will this work on a single element hotplate?
A dual simmerstat is designed to control an element with two circuits. On a single circuit hotplate you'd normally use a single simmerstat instead. Check your old switch's terminal layout and the element type, or send your cooktop model through the parts enquiry form.
