The element is the heat source for the whole drying cycle. Air is drawn across its coils, warmed, then pushed through the drum to carry moisture out of the load. When a coil breaks, the drum still turns and the timer still counts down, but the air stays cool and a normal load takes hours or never dries. A dryer that heats on and off, a burning smell, or a coil you can see is snapped or stretched also points here. Before ordering, clean the lint filter and check any exhaust ducting, because blocked airflow can trip the safety cutouts and give the same cold air symptom.
