A dryer needs a steady flow of air through the drum to carry moisture away from the clothes. On this Fisher & Paykel model, the fan belt links the motor to the blower that creates that airflow. When the belt stretches, glazes or snaps, the drum may keep turning while the air barely moves, so loads take far longer and come out damp. Other signs are a squeal or slapping noise on start-up, a burnt rubber smell and the dryer overheating and cutting out before the cycle ends. Lint packed around the fan can wear a belt early.

Replacing the fan belt
Unplug the dryer and let it cool before opening the cabinet. Photograph how the old belt runs around the motor and fan pulleys, including any tensioner, so the new one follows the same path. Vacuum the lint from around the fan and motor while the covers are off. Fit the belt with its ribs sitting in the pulley grooves, turn the fan by hand to check it tracks, then test run the dryer.
