Why the fan cover seal matters
The fan is what moves air through the dryer, and it only works properly when the housing around it is sealed. When this seal hardens, crumbles or gets pinched during a repair, air escapes at the fan cover and lint is blown into the cabinet. The dryer may take longer to dry, run hotter on the outside, or leave fluff piling up near the fan and motor. Fitting the new seal
With the dryer unplugged, remove the panels needed to reach the fan cover and lift it off. Scrape away every trace of the old seal and vacuum the fan area. Fit the new seal evenly along the cover or housing without stretching it, then refit the cover so the seal compresses all the way round. Run the dryer and check for air escaping at the join.
Questions about this part
Can I reuse the old seal when I take the fan cover off?
It's not a good idea. A seal that has been squashed and heated for years rarely springs back, and it often tears coming off. Fitting a fresh seal while the cover is already off saves opening the dryer a second time.
