What a damaged duct cover does to drying
A dryer only works well if warm air goes where it's meant to, through the clothes and out past the lint filter. Duct covers form the walls of that path. If one cracks, warps from heat or loses a clip, air leaks out early and lint gets drawn into places it shouldn't be, such as around the motor or behind the panels. You may notice longer drying times, a hotter cabinet, a dusty burning smell, lint inside the machine, or a plastic rattle as the fan runs. Lint build up inside a dryer is a fire risk, so don't leave a broken cover in place.

Before you fit the cover
Unplug the dryer first. Vacuum out any lint you find behind the old cover, around the fan and inside the duct, because a new cover won't help if the passage is clogged. Note the clip positions and any foam or felt seals, transfer seals that don't come with the new part, then refit the cover so it sits flush with no gaps along its edges.
