Noisy dryer or slow drying? Check the fan pulley
In these dryers a belt drives the fan through this pulley, and the fan moves the air that carries moisture out of the clothes. A pulley that is cracked, worn smooth, loose on its shaft or wobbling lets the belt slip or jump off. You may hear squeaking, ticking or rubbing as the dryer runs, notice a burnt rubber smell, or find loads taking much longer to dry because the fan is turning too slowly. Inspect the belt at the same time, as a glazed or frayed belt often goes hand in hand with a worn pulley.

Replacing the pulley
Unplug the dryer before you open it up. Take photos of how the belt is routed around the pulleys, as it has to go back exactly the same way. Check how the old pulley is held on its shaft before levering anything. After fitting, turn the fan by hand to make sure the belt tracks straight, then run the dryer empty for a few minutes and listen for noise.

If the belt is cracked, shiny, frayed or stretched, it makes sense to change it while the dryer is apart. A worn belt on a new pulley will still slip, and most of the labour is in getting access.
