The plate is the flat filter in the base of the tub around the sump, catching food particles before the water is pumped back up through the spray arms.

Wash water flows down through the filter plate on every cycle, and the fine mesh catches the bits that would otherwise go back through the spray arms. If the plate cracks, warps or its mesh tears, debris slips through and lands on glasses and plates as grit or a gritty film. It can also let scraps reach the wash pump or drain pump, causing blockages, noise or slow draining. A plate that no longer sits flat or locks into place is another sign it should be replaced.

Fitting the filter plate
Switch the dishwasher off at the wall and pull out the lower basket. Twist out the main filter, then lift the old plate from the base of the tub, noting how it locates. Clean out the sump before laying the new plate in. Refit the main filter so it locks and the plate sits flat, then run a rinse and listen for gurgling or rattles.
