Dishwasher not releasing detergent

The detergent dispenser sits on the inside of the door. You load it before starting, close the lid, and partway through the cycle the controls trigger it to spring open so the detergent drops into the wash water. If the catch wears, the spring fails, the lid hinge cracks or the release mechanism stops working, the lid stays shut or won't stay closed. That leads to tablets that don't dissolve, powder left caked in the cup, a film on glasses and dishes that come out dirty.

Fitting the dispenser

Switch the dishwasher off at the wall. The dispenser is reached by removing the screws around the inner door panel and separating the inner and outer door. Photograph the wiring connectors before unplugging them. Fit the new dispenser with any seal seated evenly, reassemble the door without pinching wires, and run a cycle to see the lid open on time.

Check the lid first. If it doesn't latch, or stays shut at the end of a cycle, the dispenser is at fault. If it opens but tablets still don't dissolve, look at water temperature, a blocked spray arm, or a tall plate or tray stopping the lid from opening fully.
