Dishwashers with a top sprayer send part of the wash water up a tube at the back of the tub and through a connector at the top before it reaches the sprayer. This transition piece forms part of that path. If it cracks, warps or loses its seal, water escapes before it gets to the sprayer. You'll notice weak spray at the top, food left on items in the upper rack, and sometimes water squirting toward the door. Check for blocked spray holes and a loose tube before blaming the transition.

Fitting the transition piece
Switch the dishwasher off at the wall and remove the upper basket for access. Note how the old piece connects to the supply tube and sprayer, and take a photo before you unclip or unscrew anything. Make sure any seal sits flat when the new piece goes in. Refit the cover, run a rinse and check the top sprayer gets a strong flow.
