Water from the wash pump is forced up into the lower arm and out through its jets, and the force of that water spins the arm under the bottom basket. If the arm cracks or warps, pressure leaks away and it slows or stops turning. Blocked jets have the same effect. You'll notice food left on plates in the lower rack, gritty residue on pots, or a knocking sound where a loose arm catches on the basket. Clear the jets with a toothpick first. If the arm is split, warped or won't spin freely on its mount, replace it.

Removing the lower spray arm

Turn the dishwasher off and pull the bottom basket right out. Depending on the model, the lower arm either lifts straight up off its hub or is held by a nut or clip in the centre, so check before pulling hard. Rinse the hub and filter area while the arm is off. Press the new arm into place, spin it by hand to make sure it clears the filter and basket, then run a quick program.
