Water draining from the tub passes over and through this plate before it's pumped around again. Together with the main filter cup, it stops food scraps going back onto the dishes and protects the pump. A plate that's bent, cracked or no longer sitting flat lets debris slip past. You may notice a gritty film on glasses, food bits stuck to dishes after a cycle, water left in the base, a bad smell, or a noisy pump as debris reaches it.

Fitting the filter plate
Switch the dishwasher off and remove the lower basket. Twist out the main filter, then lift the flat plate from the base, noting how it locates around the sump. Lay the new plate flat with every edge seated, refit the main filter and lock it in. Clean the filters every few weeks to keep them working well.
