Product details

This is a genuine Haier defrost sensor, part number H0070400433. The model we have on file for it is the Haier HVF260WH2. A defrost sensor is a small temperature probe mounted near the evaporator coil, and the control uses its reading to decide when a defrost should finish. If your old sensor carries the H0070400433 number, this is a direct replacement.

Ice on the back panel or Haier freezer not cold enough?

Frost-free fridges and freezers melt the ice off their evaporator coil every so often using a defrost heater. The defrost sensor reports the coil temperature so the control knows when the ice has gone and can switch the heater off and return to cooling. When the sensor drifts or fails, defrosts can stop short or not happen at all. Ice then packs the coil, airflow stops, and the cabinet warms up even though the compressor keeps running. On models with a display, a failed sensor can also bring up a fault code.

Changing the defrost sensor

Unplug the appliance and move the food to an esky or another fridge. The sensor normally sits behind the rear panel in the freezer section, clipped to the evaporator. Let any ice melt with time or a fan, never with a sharp tool or a flame. Unplug the old sensor's connector, or join the new leads with waterproof connectors if it is wired in, then refit the panel and let the unit run for a day.

Questions about this part

How can I tell if the defrost sensor is the problem?

A sensor can be tested with a multimeter by measuring its resistance at a known temperature and comparing it with the maker's figures. Heavy ice on the evaporator with a working defrost heater often points to the sensor or the control. A technician can confirm which.
