Freezer icing up? Signs the defrost heater has failed
Frost-free fridges cool by blowing air across an evaporator coil hidden behind the freezer's back panel. Moisture freezes onto that coil, so every so often the control stops cooling and powers the defrost heater to melt the ice, which then runs away down the drain. When the heater fails, the ice never clears. Airflow slowly chokes off, frost spreads across the back of the freezer, and the fresh food section warms up even though the compressor keeps running. A heater that shows no continuity on a multimeter has failed, although a faulty defrost sensor or control can cause similar symptoms.

Replacing the defrost heater
Switch the fridge off at the wall and unplug it, then empty the freezer. The heater sits behind the internal back panel, so shelves and panel screws have to come out to reach it. If the coil is iced over, let it thaw naturally rather than chipping at it, as a pierced evaporator tube means a sealed system repair. Photograph the wiring and clip positions before removing the old heater.
