In fridges where the freezer makes the cold air for both sides, the damper acts as a gate that lets it through to the fresh food section. Fitting the damper

Turn the fridge off at the wall and remove food, shelves and any covers hiding the damper, which usually sits near the top or rear of the fresh food section. Let any ice melt completely. Photograph any wiring plug and how the ducting fits, then swap the damper and reseal the duct joints so air can't bypass it. Allow several hours after switching on for temperatures to settle.
