Signs the water inlet valve on your top loader has failed

The inlet valve assembly sits where the hot and cold hoses screw onto the back of the washer. Each side is an electric solenoid valve that opens when the control board calls for water. A failed coil or blocked valve leaves the machine sitting empty, filling painfully slowly, or only taking hot or cold water. A valve that sticks open is worse, as the washer can keep filling while it's switched off and overflow onto the floor. Check that both taps are fully on and the filter screens in the hose ends are clear before you replace the valve.

Changing the inlet valve

Turn off both taps and unplug the washer. Unscrew the inlet hoses, with a bucket handy for the water left in them. Photograph the wiring on each coil and the internal hoses before taking the old assembly out. Use new hose washers if the old ones are flattened or cracked. Turn the taps back on slowly, then run a fill on hot and on cold to check both sides work and nothing drips.
