The filter catches lint and fluff from the wash water, so a cracked, torn or missing one quickly leads to fluff all over the clothes.

As the wash water circulates, it passes through the lint filter, which traps fibres, pet hair and fluff before they settle back onto the load. The mesh is fine and the plastic frame is light, so filters often crack, split along the mesh or go missing. Once that happens, lint stays in the water and ends up on dark clothes, towels shed onto everything else, and debris can make its way further into the machine. Fitting the lint filter
Turn the washer off and make sure the bowl is empty of water. Unclip the old filter from its housing, noting which way up it sits. Rinse out the housing to clear any built-up lint, then push the new filter in until it clicks or sits flush. Run a short wash with a few items to check it stays in place.
