Clothes caught at the drum edge or a scraping dryer

Felt seals wear thin with years of rubbing against the turning drum. Once worn or torn, the gap opens up and small items like socks and hankies get pulled in and chewed. You may hear a scraping or squeaking noise as metal touches metal, or find black marks and scorched edges on clothes. Air bypasses the load through the gap, so drying takes longer. Lint can also collect behind the drum where it doesn't belong, which is worth avoiding near a heater.

Fitting a new drum felt

Unplug the dryer and let it cool. The drum usually has to come out to replace a felt, so take photos as you go. Strip off the old felt completely and clean the surface of old glue and lint. Fit the new felt evenly with no twists or overlaps at the join, then refit the drum and turn it by hand to check it runs freely.
