Dryer drum wobbling, knocking or grinding?

The flange bolts to the back of the drum, and its shaft turns in the rear bearing, carrying the drum's weight as it rotates. If the shaft wears, the flange cracks or its fixings work loose, the drum can wobble, scrape against the felt seals or cabinet, knock with every turn, or drop and stop turning altogether. A worn rear bearing often goes hand in hand with shaft damage, so check both while the drum is out. Squealing or grinding from the back of the dryer is a common early warning.

Replacing the drum shaft

Unplug the dryer and give yourself room to work, as the drum has to come out. Mark the position of the old flange on the drum, undo its screws and fit the new one in the same orientation. Inspect the rear bearing and drum seals while everything is apart. Refit the drum and belt, then run the dryer empty and listen for noise.

Do I need a new bearing as well?

Not always, but the shaft and bearing wear together. If the bearing feels rough or loose, replace it at the same time. On the DE8060P2 parts list the drum bearing is a separate number, H0030201590.
