Why transit bolts matter when moving a washer

Inside a front loader, the drum and tub hang on springs and sit on shock absorbers. That's fine in use, but during transport every bump lets the heavy drum crash around, which can damage the absorbers, springs, bearings and even the cabinet. Transit bolts pass through the back panel and hold the tub firmly in place. Just as important, they must come out before the washer is used. Running a machine with the bolts still fitted causes violent shaking and loud banging, and can do serious damage.

Fitting and removing transit bolts

Unplug the washer, turn off the taps and drain any water left inside. Remove the plastic caps covering the bolt holes on the back panel, then screw each bolt in until it's snug and the tub no longer moves. Keep the caps somewhere safe. Once the machine is in its new home, take every bolt out and refit the caps before plugging it in and running a cycle.
