A split, swollen or kinked fill hose can flood a laundry quickly, so replace it as soon as it shows signs of wear.
Washing machine leaking at the tap or slow to fill?
The inlet hose carries cold water from the tap to the inlet valve on the back of the washer. It holds full mains pressure every time the machine fills, and over the years the rubber can harden, crack or swell near the end fittings. Warning signs include drips at either end, a damp patch behind the machine, a section of hose that feels soft or bulges, and slow filling when the hose has kinked behind the washer. A burst fill hose lets out a lot of water fast, so an ageing hose is worth replacing before it fails.

Swapping the inlet hose
Turn off the cold tap and unplug the washer first. Unscrew the old hose at the tap and at the machine, keeping a towel handy for the water trapped inside. Check both ends of the new hose have their sealing washers in place, then tighten them firmly by hand plus a small extra turn. Open the tap slowly and watch both joints for leaks before you push the machine back.
