Loose, cracked or missing gas cooktop knob

Gas cooktop knobs do more work than they look. Most gas valves need the knob pushed in before it will turn, and on cooktops with flame failure protection the knob is held in while the burner lights. Fitting the knob

Make sure every burner is off and the cooktop has cooled. Pull the old knob straight up off the spindle. Line up the flat on the spindle with the shape inside the new knob and press it down firmly until it seats. Push and turn it to check it reaches every position cleanly. If the spindle itself is loose or the valve feels stiff, have a licensed gas fitter inspect it.
