Before a front loader fills, the door lock switch slides a pin across to lock the door and confirms to the control board that it is shut and secure. Only then will the wash begin. At the end of the cycle it releases once the drum has stopped turning. A worn or faulty lock can cause a dE or door error code, a machine that clicks but never starts, a door that stays locked after the program has finished, or a lock that drops out partway and halts the cycle. A broken hook on the door itself causes similar symptoms, so inspect both.

Changing the door lock
Unplug the washer and make sure the drum is empty. With the door open, fold back the door seal at the lock position, undo the screws holding the lock to the front panel and unplug it from behind. Fit the new switch, reconnect the plug and screw it in place. Run a short rinse to check the door locks at the start and releases at the end.

My door is stuck shut, can I still change the lock?
Usually yes. Unplug the machine, drain any water through the pump filter at the bottom front, then remove the top panel so you can reach down behind the front and release the lock. Avoid forcing the door handle, which can break it.
