What a faulty coil thermistor does to a split system
Measuring the indoor coil temperature lets the system stop the coil freezing up in cooling mode and hold the fan back in heating until the coil is warm, so you don't get a blast of cold air. A thermistor that drifts or fails gives the board wrong information. The unit may show an error code and stop, shut down soon after starting, ice up on the coil, blow cold air at the start of heating, or cycle on and off. Damaged wiring or a loose plug at the board can cause the same faults, so check those first.

Fitting the coil thermistor
Isolate the air conditioner at its isolator or circuit breaker and wait a few minutes before opening the indoor unit. Note exactly where the old sensor clips onto the coil pipe and how its lead runs to the board. Fit the new sensor in the same holder so it has firm contact with the pipe. This job is best left to a qualified air conditioning technician or licensed electrician.
