Product details

DR153 is a generic defrost terminator that suits most Westinghouse frost free fridges and freezers. It's a compatible aftermarket part, not made by Westinghouse. The terminator clips to the evaporator and switches off the defrost heater once the coil has warmed up and cleared of ice. Compare its clip and wiring with your old terminator to confirm the fit before ordering.

Westinghouse freezer icing up? Check the defrost terminator

Frost free fridges melt the ice off the evaporator coil at regular intervals using a defrost heater. The defrost terminator senses when the coil has warmed enough and cuts the heater, so the freezer can go back to cooling. If the terminator fails open, the heater never comes on and ice builds up until the coil is a solid block. Cold air stops flowing, the fridge section warms up and the fan may scrape on ice. If it fails closed, the heater can run longer than it should and warm the freezer.

Fitting the defrost terminator

Unplug the fridge, empty the freezer and let the evaporator thaw completely before you start. Remove the rear panel in the freezer to reach the coil and note where the old terminator is clipped. If its wires are spliced rather than plugged, join the new one with proper sealed connectors so moisture can't get in. Clip it firmly to the same tube.
