Loose, cracked or slipping cooktop knob?
A control knob does more than look the part. It grips the spindle of the gas valve or energy regulator behind the panel and turns it to the setting you choose. Once the internal grip splits, the knob spins without moving the control, or moves it only part way, so you can't get the heat you want or turn the control fully off. Worn or faded markings make it hard to see which position you've selected. Heat, grease and harsh cleaners are the usual culprits. If one knob has failed, check the others, since they've all had the same wear.

Fitting a new knob
Make sure the cooktop is cold and every control is off. Pull the old knob straight off the spindle without levering against the panel, which can scratch it. Line the new knob up with the shape of the spindle and push it home firmly. Turn it through each setting to check it engages properly and that the off position lines up with the panel marking.
