Panasonic fits separate horizontal and vertical swing motors on a number of its wall splits, so the V matters when you order. The motor is driven by the indoor board and moves its set of louvres back and forth on command.

What happens when a Panasonic air swing motor fails

Air swing lets the indoor unit sweep air around the room or hold it in one direction. Each swing motor is a small motor with a lead back to the indoor board, and it moves its louvres in fine steps. Failure usually shows as louvres that won't move when you press the swing button, that stop part way, that twitch or buzz, or that sit at an odd angle when the unit is switched off. Air may then blow into a wall or straight onto people. A blade forced by hand or a broken linkage can produce the same symptoms, so inspect those parts too.

Part details

Genuine Panasonic part CWA98K1018

Vertical (V) air swing motor

Listed for the CS-S18NKR indoor unit

Also check the louvre linkage when replacing

Fitting the vertical swing motor

Switch off with the remote and isolate the unit at the circuit breaker or isolator. Take off the front grille to reach the motor, noting how the lead is routed and clipped. Swap the motor, refit the cable along the same path so it can't foul the fan, then restore power and run the swing function to check the louvres travel fully. Use a licensed technician for hard-wired units.

Questions about this part

Is this the horizontal or vertical swing motor?

This is the vertical one, marked (V) in the parts description. The horizontal swing on the same unit is usually driven by a different motor with its own part number, so check which louvre has stopped moving before you order.
