The outdoor fan moves air across the condenser coil so the system can shed heat in cooling mode and pick it up in heating mode. If the motor fails, the compressor keeps running but pressures and temperatures climb, and the system soon trips out or shows an error code. You may notice the outdoor fan standing still while the unit hums, the fan turning slowly or only after a push, grinding or squealing from worn bearings, or poor cooling on hot days. Check the fan blade is free of debris and not cracked before replacing the motor.

Fitting the outdoor fan motor
Isolate the system at the outdoor isolator and the switchboard, and wait several minutes for stored charge in the electronics to drain. Remove the top and front panels, then the propeller fan nut and blade, noting which way the blade faces. Photograph the motor wiring route before disconnecting it. Air conditioners are hard-wired, so this replacement needs a licensed electrician or air conditioning technician.
