Product details
CC40900 is a generic thermocouple kit with a 900mm lead, for gas appliances that use a pilot flame and a thermocouple flame safety system. These are common on gas hot water systems, heaters and older cookers. As a generic kit, it's intended to replace thermocouples across a variety of gas appliances rather than one brand. Measure your old thermocouple and check its connection at the gas valve before ordering, and have it fitted by a licensed gas fitter.
Pilot light won't stay lit? Check the thermocouple
A thermocouple sits in the pilot flame and produces a tiny voltage as it heats. That voltage holds the gas valve's safety magnet open. If the flame goes out, the thermocouple cools, the voltage drops and the valve shuts off the gas. When a thermocouple wears out, the classic symptom is a pilot that lights while you hold the button down but goes out as soon as you let go. The tip also burns away over time, and a bent tip that sits outside the flame causes the same problem.

Fitting a thermocouple, gas safety first
In Australia, work on gas appliances must be done by a licensed gas fitter. Turn the appliance off and isolate the gas supply before starting. The thermocouple tip must sit in the pilot flame as the original did, and the valve end should be tightened firmly but not overtightened. Coil any spare length loosely, never kink it. Check the pilot holds and the appliance runs normally afterwards.
Questions about this part
How do I know 900mm is the right length?
Measure your old thermocouple from the tip to the nut at the gas valve. A slightly longer one is usually fine as the extra can be coiled loosely, but a shorter one won't reach. Other lengths are available if 900mm doesn't suit.
