Product details
Rated at 20 microfarads, CAP020 is a generic run capacitor for single phase motors. It's a universal part rather than one made for a particular brand, and it suits equipment where the capacitor being replaced is a run type marked 20uF. Run capacitors of this size turn up on motors such as pumps, fans and compressors. Before buying, compare the voltage rating, case size and terminals on your old capacitor with CAP020.
What a run capacitor does and how it fails
A run capacitor stays in the circuit the whole time the motor is on. It helps create the rotating magnetic field that keeps a single phase motor turning smoothly and efficiently. As one ages, its value drops. Typical signs are a motor that hums but won't start, starts slowly, runs hot or trips the overload after a short time. Physical damage such as a swollen top, oil leaking from the case or burnt terminals is a clear sign it needs replacing.

Before you fit CAP020
Isolate the power first, and discharge the old capacitor before handling it, as it can hold a charge. Take a photo of the wiring or label each wire. Fit the new run capacitor with the same connections and secure it so it can't rub or vibrate. Choose a voltage rating at least as high as the original. Hard-wired equipment and air conditioners should be serviced by a licensed technician.
Questions about this part
Is a run capacitor the same as a start capacitor?
No. A start capacitor only works for a moment while the motor gets going, then drops out of the circuit. A run capacitor stays connected while the motor runs. CAP020 is a run capacitor, so replace like with like and match the 20uF value.
