Oven grill not heating? The upper element may have failed
The upper heating element is the loop of tubing fixed to the top of the oven cavity. On the grill setting it glows red to brown the top of the food, and on some functions it adds top heat while the oven bakes. When it burns out the grill stays cold, toast and cheese never colour, and baked dishes come out pale on top. Look for blistering, a split or a visible break along the tube. An element that trips the safety switch as soon as the grill is turned on has usually shorted to its outer sheath.

Changing the grill element
Ovens are usually hard-wired, so have a licensed electrician fit this element after isolating the oven at the switchboard. Access is normally through the back panel or the oven roof, depending on the model. Photograph the terminals before removing any wires, move them across to the same positions on the new element and make sure it sits in its brackets clear of the cavity walls. Test it on the grill setting.
