As the washer agitates and rinses, water circulates through the lint filter, which collects fluff, hair and loose threads. A torn mesh or a broken frame lets that lint pass straight back into the drum, so you'll notice fluff on dark clothes and towels. The filter also needs regular emptying. A clogged one stops collecting lint and can hold onto smells, so rinse it out every few loads and check the mesh for holes while you're at it.

Fitting the lint filter
Turn the machine off before reaching into the drum. Unclip the old filter from its housing and note which way round it sits. Clean any built-up lint from the mount, then press the new filter in until it locks firmly. Check it is seated properly before starting a wash, as a loose filter can come away during agitation.
