Kenwood makes its Chef and Chef XL machines with different bowl sizes, and the tools are shaped to sweep close to each bowl. Use a beater meant for a smaller bowl and it misses the mix around the sides and base, while one that's too big scrapes or catches. The beater locks onto the outlet with a push and twist fitting, so a worn fitting lets it drop off or wobble. Coated beaters can chip and flake over time, which stainless steel avoids. Bent blades, flaking or a loose fit are good reasons to replace it.

Attaching the beater
Switch the mixer off and unplug it before changing tools. Raise the mixer head, push the beater up onto the outlet and turn it to lock it on. Check the clearance by lowering the head over the empty bowl. If the beater touches the bottom or sits too high and your model allows adjustment, set the height as your Kenwood manual describes. Wash it before first use.
