Why a Euro rangehood light stops working

The light assembly holds the halogen globe in the underside of the hood and carries power to it from the rangehood's switch. Because it sits directly above the cooktop, it copes with steam, grease and plenty of heat, which over time can crack the lens, discolour the housing and burn out the socket contacts. A globe that flickers, works only when tapped, or blows again soon after replacement points to a worn holder. Melted plastic or scorch marks around the light mean it should be replaced straight away.

Changing the light assembly

Turn the rangehood off, switch it off at the wall or isolator and let the old globe cool. Remove the grease filters for better access and photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything. Most halogen fittings press or clip into a cut-out in the hood panel. Never touch a halogen globe with bare fingers. If your hood is hard-wired with no plug, have a licensed electrician do the job.
