Coffee machine steam knob slipping or broken?
On coffee machines with a manual steam wand, the steam knob turns a valve spindle to release steam for frothing milk. The knob fits onto a shaped spindle, and wear, heat and over-tightening can round out that fitting. Once it's stripped, the knob spins without opening the valve or won't shut the steam off fully. Cracks from knocks are common too. If the knob turns freely but nothing happens, check whether the spindle itself is turning before ordering a new knob.

Replacing the steam knob
Unplug the machine and let it cool completely, as steam parts stay hot for a while. Many knobs pull straight off or are held by a small screw under a cap. Line the new knob up with the spindle's flat or splines, push it on firmly, then check the steam opens and closes fully before you froth any milk.
