LG top loader not filling, filling slowly or overflowing?

A dual inlet valve has two solenoids, one for each water connection. The control board energises the hot side, the cold side or both to get the right wash temperature. When a solenoid coil burns out, that side stops letting water in, so the washer may fill only with cold, only with hot, or not at all, and an IE fill error can appear. A valve that sticks open causes the opposite problem, filling even when the machine is off, which can overflow the tub. Blocked inlet screens give similar symptoms, so check them first.

Fitting the inlet valve

Turn off both taps and unplug the washer. Unscrew the inlet hoses at the back and catch any water left in them. Take a photo of the wiring and the outlet hoses on the old valve, swap the valve over and reconnect everything exactly as it was. Fit new hose washers if the old ones are flattened, then turn the taps on and look for drips.

Questions about this part

My washer only fills with cold water. Is it the valve?

Quite possibly. If the hot tap is on and hot water reaches the machine, a failed hot-side solenoid is a common cause. Also check the screen in the hot hose connection for blockages before replacing the valve.
