Instead of a tall agitator, the pulsator turns back and forth to roll clothes through the water. It's driven through a splined hub, and if those splines wear, the pulsator can slip on the shaft so the wash barely moves. Cracked or chipped fins can catch and tear fabric, and a loose pulsator may knock, scrape or grind as it turns. Clothes coming out tangled, still dirty or with snags are common signs. Check the retaining bolt is tight before blaming the pulsator itself.

Changing an LG pulsator

Unplug the washer and turn off both taps. On many LG top loaders, a cap on the pulsator pops off to reveal a single centre bolt. Undo it and lift the pulsator straight up, taking your time if residue has bonded it to the shaft. Clean the shaft splines, seat the new pulsator fully, refit the bolt firmly and run a short rinse to test.
