Water pumped up from the sump is forced out through the jets on this arm, and the push of that water spins the arm so the spray covers the whole lower rack. If the arm cracks, its jets block with food or glass fragments, or its hub wears so it wobbles or sticks, the lower rack comes out dirty or gritty while the top rack may still be fine. An arm striking a tall plate can also be heard knocking during the wash. Clean the filter and jets first, then replace the arm if it is damaged.

Changing the lower spray arm
Turn the dishwasher off at the wall and take out the lower rack. The lower arm normally lifts or unclips from its hub in the base of the tub, so check how yours is held before pulling hard. Clean the hub and the filter area, fit the new arm and spin it by hand to make sure it turns freely and clears both the rack and the base.
