Noise, airflow and a damaged fan grille
Besides acting as a guard, the grille helps direct the air the fan pushes out of the unit. A warped or partly broken grille can disturb that airflow and make the unit noisier, with buzzing, rattling or a whistling tone that changes with fan speed. Loose pieces can vibrate against the cabinet or fall into the blade. If the grille has sagged toward the fan, the blade may clip it on every turn. A new grille restores safe clearance and quieter running, and it's worth checking the blade and motor while you're there.

Installation notes
Before touching the outdoor unit, switch it off and turn the isolator beside it to off. Remove the old grille, clear leaves and debris from around the fan and coil, and fit the new grille with all its fixings. Hand-turn the blade to check it clears the grille. If the fan or wiring needs attention, call a licensed technician.
Questions about this part
Can I run the air conditioner without the fan grille?
It's not recommended. Without a grille the spinning blade is exposed, which is a serious injury risk, and debris can get in and damage the fan. Keep the system off until a replacement grille that matches your unit is fitted.
