Air leaving the drum carries fluff from towels and clothes, and the lint filter traps it before it can travel further into the dryer. A filter with a torn mesh or broken frame lets lint pass straight through, where it clogs the airways and the parts that pull moisture out of the air. The dryer then runs longer for the same load, clothes stay damp and the machine may show a warning or stop early. A filter caked with softener residue can block airflow even when it looks intact.
