Before you fit the surround
Measure the cooktop across its widest point to confirm it's a 600mm unit. If the cooktop has to be lifted out to fit the surround, isolate the power at the switchboard first, and turn off the gas supply for a gas model. Disconnecting and reconnecting a hard-wired cooktop is work for a licensed electrician, and a gas cooktop must be reconnected by a licensed gas fitter.
