Product details

Genuine Ariston thermocouple, part number A546468. This is the flame failure probe on an Ariston gas appliance, the small metal sensor that sits in the flame beside the burner and tells the gas valve a flame is present. It suits Ariston cooktops and other Ariston gas cooking appliances built with this part. Match A546468 to the number on your old part or your parts list before ordering.

Ariston gas burner lights then goes out? Check the thermocouple

When the tip of a thermocouple is heated by the flame it produces a tiny voltage. That voltage holds a magnet in the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the voltage drops away and the valve shuts off the gas. Once the probe wears out, the burner lights while you hold the knob in and then dies as soon as you let go, or it drops out a few minutes later. A tip bent out of the flame or caked in grease gives the same symptom, so clean it and check its position first.

  • Flame failure thermocouple for gas burners
  • Shuts off the gas if the flame goes out
  • Gas safety part, licensed gas fitter installation required

Fitting a thermocouple safely

Gas work in Australia must be done by a licensed gas fitter, so book one for this job. Turn the gas off at the isolation valve and switch the appliance off at the wall first. The fitter will check the lead length and end fitting against the old one, seat the tip so the flame wraps around it properly, and test that the burner stays alight and shuts off when it should.

Questions about this part

How do I know the thermocouple is the problem?

If the burner lights while you hold the knob down but goes out when you release it, the thermocouple is the most common cause. A dirty or misaligned tip can do the same thing, so a gas fitter will usually check that before replacing the part.
