Signs your oven grill element has failed
The grill element sits in the roof of the oven or grill compartment and glows red to give direct top heat for browning, toasting and melting cheese. Elements fail when the internal coil breaks or the sheath splits, often after years of heating and cooling. You may see a section that no longer glows, a blister or crack in the tube, or sparks when the grill is switched on. If the element looks fine but stays cold, the grill switch, thermostat or wiring could be at fault, so test before you buy.

Fitting a new grill element
Power off at the isolator or circuit breaker first, and leave hard-wired ovens to a licensed electrician. Grill elements are usually held by screws at the terminal end, with brackets supporting the front. Take a photo of the wiring before removing the old one, fit the new element in the same position, and run the grill for a few minutes to make sure it glows evenly from end to end.
