Why a Smeg gas oven burner won't stay alight
A thermocouple is a flame failure safety device. Its tip sits in the burner flame, and the heat generates a small voltage that holds the gas valve open. If the flame goes out, the voltage drops and the valve shuts off the gas. As thermocouples age, the tip corrodes or the lead gets damaged, and the voltage falls too low.
