Limescale builds up wherever hot water sits or sprays, and grease and detergent residue stick to it. On the heating element, scale acts like insulation, so the machine takes longer to heat the water. In the spray arms it partly blocks the jets, and in the sump it traps food residue that starts to smell. Run the descaler through an empty dishwasher when you notice white crust on the tub or door, chalky glasses, weak wash results or a musty odour.
